Assessment Component
Word Limit / Time Limit
Essay
3,500 words

Answer this of the following question :

Identify a public health issue in Saudi Arabia and critically appraise the available evidence to inform the planning of a potential intervention or programme.

The assessment has some flexibility in terms of what issues or themes should be included and critically analysed. The standard of the assignment will be examined on

the depth of analysis and supported discussion of relevant theories and principles.

4.2 Assessment Guidelines

• The assessment for this module has been designed to allow you to demonstrate through critical discussion, your understanding of the underpinning concepts and

approaches to public health practice and the role of public health in primary health care.
• The taught component will give you an introductory insight which will enable you to address any of the questions. However, a successful answer will demonstrate that

you have read further on the subject and are able to critically evaluate and apply that knowledge.

• Your assignment should be written as an essay, containing:

An Introduction – which set out the objectives of the essay (this demonstrates how you’ve interpreted the question) and the key areas you are exploring, broadly

outlining or mapping the structure of your essay, and your approach to the question.

Main Body – Having set out the broad outline/map in the introduction, you have a structure to develop your essay. This is where you develop your key arguments with

critical analysis of selected theory or literature i.e. its strengths and weaknesses, advantages and disadvantages and/or comparison of different theoretical

perspectives. Write in paragraphs that develop a particular aspect or theme (i.e. avoid stringing together a series of single line sentences or ‘paragraphs’). While

sub headings can be used if preferred, it would be expected that each section, paragraph has a connection with the one that preceded it. So a transition sentence

linking paragraphs /sections indicating how you are developing your arguments and providing a clear logical and coherent flow to the essay

Conclusion – a summary of the main arguments you have presented in your main body and your analysis of the essay question and consider whether/how the essay has met

its objectives. New material should not be introduced here.

Confidentiality
It is essential that the confidentiality of patients and health or social care organisations is maintained throughout assignments. Use a pseudonym if you wish to refer

to NHS organisations or other organisations/departments. Clearly identify in the text or in an Appendix if a pseudonym is being used to avoid any confusion

All assignments should have a cover page which includes the following information:

• Module Title
• Module code
• Your Student Number
• Assignment Title
• Module Leader Name
• Exact Word Count
• Submission date

You also need to provide a clear statement of the selected public health issue, the population affected providing relevant background and context and quantifying the

issue. Consider relevant policy drivers and frameworks and draw on the
‘best available’ research evidence in relation to your chosen issue and appraise its applicability and value in relation to possible public health interventions etc.

Remember to write in paragraphs that develop a particular aspect or theme (i.e. avoid stringing together a series of single line sentences or ‘paragraphs’). While sub

headings can be used if preferred, it would be expected that each section, paragraph has a connection with the one that preceded it. So a transition sentence linking

paragraphs /sections indicating how you are developing your arguments and providing a clear logical and coherent flow to the essay is expected.
