Identify a stage, such as stage 4 or stage 5, from a secondary curriculum area (for EC/Primary students, choose a stage from a primary curriculum area) and write an account of how the following concepts might impact on the way you would need to select resources and activities, engage students in the unit, sequence activities, organise the classroom and assess the learning of students

Part (a): A mind map (approx. 250-300 words)
To begin this task use the mind map template (an example to be provided), to develop an overview for an integrated unit of work.
1. Identify a stage, such as stage 4 or stage 5, from a secondary curriculum area (for EC/Primary students, choose a stage from a primary curriculum area) and write an account of how the following concepts might impact on the way you would need to select resources and activities, engage students in the unit, sequence activities, organise the classroom and assess the learning of students. This unit of work needs to take account of policies and research around:
• Multiculturalism
• Identity
• Racism
• Teaching students from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds.
2. From this unit of work, sketch out the learning design for one rich task that includes three outcomes that addresses multiculturalism and racism along with the content learning outcomes of the task.

3. In your design for this task include appropriate learning strategies that will be useful for supporting NESB learners.

Part (b): Rationale for learning and teaching (1250 words)
Give a justification of:
1. Why you would teach the topic in the chosen stage.
2. Describe the learning rich task and how it is relevant to supporting NESB learners (things to consider: curriculum based, culturally appropriate and modified/differentiated instructions).
3. Describe how the teaching strategies identified in Part (a) above meet the needs of all students and in particular NESB learners.
4. Support your justification using relevant readings from the prescribed readings list and other appropriate teaching and learning resources.

Part (c): Reflective Piece (500-750 words)
Briefly, reflect on how and in what ways participation in this subject has enhanced your understanding of the importance of valuing diversity in classrooms, adapting culturally appropriate pedagogies, and conducting self-assessment of your own cultural awareness as a teacher (relate your reflection to at least three relevant readings from the prescribed readings list).
Rationale
This assessment item meets the following objectives:
· be able to recognise social issues that impact on the involvement of multicultural communities within school settings, and devise strategies that create positive pathways for partnerships to support children’s learning;
· demonstrate effective teaching strategies to meet the educational needs of diverse linguistic, cultural, religious and socioeconomic background children, particularly focussed on culturally appropriate pedagogies in all learning areas;
· demonstrate an ability to develop, differentiate/modify, implement and evaluate programs, strategies and resources in relation to diverse/multicultural perspectives.
