If applicable, students will first need to seek permission from the group or organisation they wish to ‘plunge’with (for example,

a

charitable organisation). Students will then ‘take the plunge’ and in a written form reflect on the experience. The reflection should

describe where you visited, why/how you chose the site, what you did/what happened during yourvisit, what you noticed, and how you felt.
Your ‘plunge’ needs to be a new experience undertaken with this assessment in mind. A retrospective look at a past experience is not
acceptable.

Your plunge cannot involve merely sitting on the sidelines and observing. It must be a situation where you are involved and
interacting with others. You must also complete a risk assessment priorto completing your plunge. The risk assessment form can be found in
the ‘resources’ section ofthe lnteract subject site. Please attach the completed form to your assessment task when submitting. If you are
unsure whether your ‘plunge’ experience is relevant, ethical or safe, please discuss your ideas with your allocated tutorvia email.

The final, and most important part ofthe reflection should be a thoughtful, critical analysis of your personal responses to the experience. You
need to turn your gaze inward to examine yourself and your reactions to the plunge. Why did you feel the ways in which you did? What
prompted your discomfort? How did the identity categories that you occupy suddenly become apparent to you as you plunged? What did this

experience teach you about yourself? How does all ofthis connect (or not) to class readings and/or other relevant readings? You should

write about your understandings ofwhat these feelings mean in relation to your approach(es) to teaching and to the young people you will
work with in the future. You should keep in mind that this assessment is about you and what you learned, not about the group that you
