This is an interesting case, and I’m very curious how Hansen’s efforts ended up playing out. I’m under the impression that Hansen was misguided in several of her ideas, but that her perseverance and effort could still possibly yield some positive results. For example, when “Hansen started by replacing a couple of the existing department heads in an effort to replicate the ethnic mix of the facility’s staff,” (Singh pg 508) I’m not sure that was the correct move. The text makes no mention of whether or not department heads were ripe for being replaced already. If not, than making the change solely to replicate the ethnic breakdown of the staff is certainly a bad idea.
Nevertheless, her diligent efforts in creating committees, meeting with department heads, and informally speaking with line staff surely went a long way towards creating an environment where the staff felt leadership had their best interest in minds. I believe that anytime you have a population with a huge mix of diverse ethnic groups, there will be some grouping together of people with similar backgrounds. However, as long as there is a culture in place where everyone feels supported, feels that there are boundaries, and that everyone is carrying an equal load, then the tribalism of different groups isn’t a problem.
