“Research paper: Students will be responsible for completing one research paper assignment this semester. The purpose of this assignment is to help students recognize the importance of the study of psychology in their lives as well as in the lives of all people. The research paper assignment will require that students not only understand the course material, but also that students use more analytical thinking skills to apply the information to everyday life. Research papers specifically target the course competencies discussed earlier in the syllabus. Students are required to format the paper according to APA guidelines. I have uploaded several resources on APA guidelines in your Section 3 “Helpful Resources” folder. Papers should be double spaced and credit all sources sufficiently. It is imperative that students DO NOT PLAGIARIZE. Students must use appropriate in-text citations, quotations, and reference sources appropriately. This is very important because the application in Blackboard will check your submission for plagiarism. Assignments that are over 20% matching will be investigated and are in jeopardy of receiving a score of zero. Research papers that do not include a references page and appropriate in-text citations will not be accepted and will receive a score of zero.Students should utilize their text as well as other relevant sources in addressing the research paper topic. Once again, plagiarism is a serious offense, so always give credit to your sources. Although I do encourage the use of personal opinion and experience, keep in mind, that students must also incorporate appropriate factual information in order to adequately cover the required objectives.Any personal opinion or experience shared should be clearly relevant to the topic and should be discussed in a professional manner using appropriate language. Make sure you read the research topic thoroughly for an understanding of the objectives. Each objective is required, so students not adequately covering one of the objectives will lose points. Use the objectives as an outline for your paper. Do not answer them as if this is another chapter essay assignment. Because this is a paper, there should be a clear introduction, body, and conclusion as well as references and citations as needed. The purpose of the research assignment is to give students an opportunity to apply the material from the course to real-life situations. Students will want to compose their papers in a word or document program. It is my hope that students will spend at least several days, possibly weeks, modifying and revising their papers before submitting. I do not give a length requirement for papers; however, papers less than three pages (double spaced) rarely demonstrate the necessary time, effort, and research needed to adequately cover the required objectives. Research papers are due by the final deadline and time posted in your schedule. NO EXCEPTIONS!Students will be able to upload their research paper assignments by browsing their computer to locate the appropriate file. Please make sure that your paper is saved in an approved format. Safe Assignment accepts files in .doc, .docx, .odt, .txt, .rtf, .pdf, and .html file formats only. Do not upload files in any other formats. Papers MUST be submitted in the safe assignment section. Papers sent via email will NOT be accepted and will receive a score of zero. Get started and submit as early as possible to avoid missing the final deadline. Students not submitting their assignment by the final deadline will receive a score of zero. If you have concerns or questions, email me BEFORE the final deadline. There is little that I can do to assist you on the final deadline. Topic: During the past 50 years, after major mid-century leaps in psychopharmacology, psychotropic drugs have taken the lead among treatments for mental disorders such as depression and schizophrenia. Chapter two briefly mentions the ability of certain drugs to modulate neurotransmission in a number of ways. Chapter 13 introduces you to several of the mental disorders and symptoms from the DSM-V. Chapter 14 will also reference biomedical therapies. Select ONE of the medications listed below as the topic for your research paper.

Once you have chosen your specific drug topic from the above list, you can begin your research and complete your paper. Although papers can include relevant personal experience and opinions, please keep in mind that they should also include enough factual information to adequately meet the objectives of the assignment. Feel free to utilize information from your text, reliable online sources, and other relevant references, but make sure you give appropriate credit to all sources. Remember, papers that do not include in-text citations and a references page will receive a score of zero. Chapters 2, 13, & 14 may be especially helpful to you. Don’t forget about the “Helpful Resources” folder for each of those chapters in Blackboard.

Points will be awarded based on your ability to address each of the objectives listed below accurately and effectively.

Your paper should meet and will be graded based on your completion of the following objectives:

Objective 1 (worth 5 points) For what conditions/disorders is the drug prescribed? (psychological and otherwise)

Objective 2 (worth 10 points) Provide a brief summary of the psychological disorders indicated in Objective 1. Include specific DSM-V criteria.

Objective 3 (worth 5 points) Does research indicate possible side effects while taking the drug? Discuss.

Objective 4 (worth 5 points) Which neurotransmitter(s) is/are influenced by this drug?

Objective 5 (worth 10 points) Describe the primary function of this/these neurotransmitter(s)and how they are related to the psychological disorders mentioned and described in Objectives 1 & 2.

Objective 6 (worth 10 points) Would the drug be considered an agonist or an antagonist? Discuss.

Objective 7 (worth 10 points) How does the drug’s action on the neurotransmitter(s) alleviate symptoms of the condition/disorder?

Objective 8 (worth 5 points) What are your thoughts about treatment involving the drug? Do alternative treatments exist?

Objective 9 (worth 10 points) Is the paper formatted according to APA guidelines (typed, double spaced, with a title page, abstract, reference page, appropriate headers, pages numbers, etc?)

Objective 10 (worth 10 points) Was the topic well researched? Did the writer use current and valid sources? Were the sources referenced and cited sufficiently?
