Throughout this course we have covered thirteen different leadership theories, cases
examining specific circumstances, and activities that ask you to apply your knowledge.
The purpose of the final assignment is to have you integrate these different elements with
your own values, aspirations and life experiences. The ultimate goal is to have you form
relationships between concepts, narratives and theories that may not normally relate.
Your final is to create a 15-17 page essay (approximately 5000 words) that reflects on our
course in a meaningful way.
Your essay should incorporate the following aspects:

What you perceive to be the salient (ie. noteworthy) parts of the course. What
grabbed you? What did you hate about the course? Did anything strike you as
brilliant (or stupid)?
A reflection on the meaning to you of:
o The feedback to your group
o The feedback that you received from your other group members
o What did you learn about receiving and giving feedback?
A link to the cases that we covered, with a minimum consideration of:
o Two of the facilitated cases that were not presented by your group

just simply summarize the cases.
A consideration of our discussion regarding the “dark side” of leadership.
o Where does boundary between leadership and manipulation/coercion occur.
o How do you gain perspective when you are subject to unethical leadership
and how do you stop yourself from becoming a coercive leader?
A reflection on the final course simulation
A consideration of the kind of leader you would like to be
Some additional criteria for you essay includes:
• Consideration of your personality and the personalities of your classmates and
group members.
• References to the theories presented in the textbook.
As was the case with the midterm, this final assignment is ambiguous and open-ended by
design. How you structure your essay is up to you, as is the degree of personal reflection
that you wish to include. What your essay is “about” is entirely up to you.
This essay will be graded based on four factors: the mastery of the material that you
display in your writing; the coherence of your narrative and arguments; your inclusion of
sources from required readings and your own research; and the organization of your
essay.
Please submit the essay to SafeAssign no later than the start of our final exam period on
18 December at Noon. Late essays may not be accepted, so please submit it on time.
