Describe the development of language acquisition

Refer to week 1 – 5 readings and activities
Chapter 3: Language Acquisition (Baker & Hengeveld, 2012), pp. 56-78, provides some more insight into how infants and young children learn their first language, or mother tongue.
Young children’s oral language development (Genishi, 1998) links the concepts we explored in week one with those from this week.
Your writing needs to be backed up with theoretical literature/evidence

Explore theories of language development

Refer to week 3 readings and activities
There are various theories of learning and development which can be applied to how children develop language. These include sociocultural, cognitivist, nativist and behaviourist.
Unit Six: Conclusions: theories about child language development (Gillen, 2012) pp. 79-86, provides an overview of sociocultural, cognitivist, nativist and behaviourist theories of language acquisition in children.
Your writing needs to be backed up with theoretical literature/evidence.

Compare and contrast differing theories of language development.

Go back through the individual readings that relate to the different theories of language development and within your essay choose aspects of these theories to compare and contrast.
Let’s look at the different arguments behind each theory and the relationship between them:

social interactions and experiences (sociocultural)
children’s cognitive development as the basis for learning (cognitivist)
observable behaviours, in this case verbal behaviour to understand how children acquire language (behaviourist)
children are born with an understanding of certain rules about language, which they apply as they grow and are exposed to more language (nativist)

For example:
You might decide to highlight the fact that that Vygotsky believes that children develop language skills through modelling and interactions with others, yet Chomsky says that children are born with these skills already implanted within their biological makeup.

Discuss the implications of differing theoretical perspectives upon educators’ engagement with children.

Link to teaching strategies – refer to Part 1 of assessment 1 to help you.  Ask your self these questions:

Is one theory the right theory?  How do the theories overlap and intertwine?  How can we use these theoretical perspectives within the classroom?  What teaching strategies can we use?  Remember that these strategies need to relate directly to language.

For example:
You might acknowledge the importance of Skinners theory – he believed that positive reinforcement is more effective in learning than punishment.  This perspective can be utilised within the classroom by using strategies to encourage and empower children when they succeed and do well with certain language tasks.

It may be challenging for you if you haven’t been in an educational setting to know the implications of these theoretical perspectives within a classroom, and this is why it’s important to start using curriculum documents which can inform your thinking and help you to link these perspectives to your teaching practice.  You could also talk to other educators’ and get their views and opinions.

If you need some guidance in regards to development as a teacher, you may want to refer to the AITSL standards for teaching practice which is what your practicum requirements are based on.  This will give you a good insight in to how you can incorporate theoretical perspectives in to your teaching practice.
