Introduction:
This essay will include information on infection control and MRSA, it will explain the importance of the subtopic which is MRSA and also explain the themes of the essay which are, what is MRSA, how is MRSA commonly spread, who is most susceptible to MRSA, MRSA in the elderly, how to prevent MRSA and hand hygiene. Infection control is an important subject within all clinical setting as it prevents service users, whom already have diseases and wounds, worse than they were before they used the health care service. It is extremely important that all healthcare professionals provide safe, quality care, including basic infection control practices. GUIDELINES FOR PREPARING AND STRUCTURING THE ESSAY – MOD001902.
Before you start writing you need to: 1. Choose one of the 5 main topics. 2. Decide on a subtopic which interests you and relates to the main topic. 3. Search the literature during which you should find a large number of journal articles (literature reviews and research papers), books, policies, websites, leaflets, newspaper articles etc. 4. Read the literature and identify common themes within the literature. 5. Read more literature about these themes.
INTRODUCTION In this you need to identify the topic, the subtopic, why the subject chosen is important (not from a personal point of view), what themes will be covered, and the 5 research terms.
LITERATURE SEARCHING PROCESS In this you will need to include the databases used, the key words, any filter options you use such as date, language, country of origin and the number of hits at each stage of the searching process. You also need to identify how you found ‘non-journal’ sources you use such as books, leaflets, policies.
MAIN BODY (please see notes on next page for more information about content). This section needs to be split into smaller sections based on the topic/subtopic NOT the research papers/terms. Section One: General discussion on chosen main topic. Section Two: General discussion on subtopic. Section Three: Focused discussion on how main topic and subtopic are linked and at the end identify themes. Section Four onwards: Focused discussion on identified themes. Each theme should be addressed separately and linked to the main topic/subtopic when needed.
An example (Pain Management for Surgical Patients – unrelated to this essay) is: Section One: Pain – what is pain, what happens in the body, types of pain, theories related to pain. Section Two: Surgery – what happens in surgery to cause pain, what type of pain is it. Section Three: Post-operative pain – theory about post-operative pain, how long should it last, what happens to patients who are in pain (e.g. lack of mobilising, decreased appetite), reasons why is it important to manage pain effective.
From this you identify important themes for further discussion. Following sections in this example could include pain assessment, nurse knowledge of pain, patient education, pain specialist team, pain management pharmacological, pain management non-pharmacological.
CONCLUSION Summarise the main points of the essay. Think about each section you have written about and try and summarise the important bits into one or two sentences and highlight what this means in relation to other points and nursing practice/patient care.

1. You need to be able to write about your topic in some depth and with accuracy (this is what demonstrate an understanding means). To do this you need to identify relevant themes to talk about. It is better to write more about fewer themes, than to write a little about many themes. This will allow you to really look into each one and write about everything you find out.
2. Once you know what you wish to write about, you must find a lot (this is what wide means) of supporting literature to back up what you say. Literature includes books, leaflets, policies, practice guidelines, literature reviews and research papers (this is what varied means).
3. The literature should not be too old (this is what contemporary means). Ideally you should be looking at no older than 5 years if it is related to something we do in practice. If you can’t find much up to 5 years, then 10 years would be acceptable. Anything older should only by ‘classic text’ e.g. something that is old but still referred to today and therefore still relevant.

Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of the chosen topic/theory on clinical practice.
1. When you write about what the theory says about your topic, you need to apply this to practice to show that you understand the impact.
2. To do this you must consider the following:
What should happen? – what does the literature say about the topic, the care that patients should receive or the practice that nurses should do e.g. All patients should have an assessment on admission.
What actually happens? – what does the literature say about the topic, the care that patients actually receive or the practice that nurse actually do e.g. Only 58% of patients have an assessment on admission.
Why does it happen? – Do they match or not? If they don’t match (this is the theory/practice gap) why is that? What does the literature say are the reasons e.g. why are 42% of patients not being assessed. Are the reasons given valid?
What are the implications for patient care and/or nursing practice – having looked at the above, how does it affect patients and/or nurses e.g. some of the 42% of patients could be at risk and it is never identified which could result in a patient being harmed or becoming more unwell, or even dying. Where do nurses stand professionally if they don’t do what they are meant to do.

Copy of the Article “Student perceptions of support in practice” which can be found on VLE.

Copy of the questionnaire (you can start this prior to the session if you wish).

You will use a ready prepared framework to understand a chosen article.
You will have already had some lectures and group work sessions on research theory but may not have covered every aspect when this session is delivered. These will have given you a basic grounding to understanding the article provided but further guidance will be required from your tutor.
