Information Literacy: Discerning Information Sources

Information Literacy: Discerning Information Sources

All students are to perform four electronic searches, using the elements below.
Search the Web for a scholarly article (1) and an Ezine article (2).
Search the Web for a blog (3) and a wiki article (4) and discuss the differences as described in your readings. Include the name and location of the article.

Post a summary of your experiences and findings using the evaluation criteria included in your readings to assess the credibility of the sites, and including, at a

minimum:
a discussion of the differences between 1 and 2, as described in your readings;
Include the name and location of the articles.
a discussion of the differences between 3 and 4, as described in your readings;
Include the name and location of the blog/article.

Here is an example of what it should look like:

1. SCHOLARLY ARTICLE:

I used Google Scholar to search for a scholarly article. The article I found in Google Scholar was published in Journal of American Medical Informatics Association.

The authors are experts within the field of nursing and informatics. The website did not contain any advertisements, all information referenced to scholarly and

medical resources. The website was clearly up to date and free of bias and opinion.

Informatics. Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association?: JAMIA, 14(1), 19–24. doi:10.1197/jamia.M1996

2. EZINE

I used ADVANCE for Nurses to search for an article. The only information provided on the author of the article is he’s a charge nurse at a state hospital in Maine. The

website does have advertisements. The website is clearly specifies the date last updated and privacy statement.

3. BLOG

I used Jeanne Sewell’s blog to find an article. This blog provides information on the author of the website assuring her credibility on the topic. The blog does not

have any advertisements. The blog posts are up to date.

informatics-and-nursing.html

4. WIKI ARTICLE

I used Wikipedia to search for the article. The article does not have an author. I usually only use Wikipedia to quickly look up a topic. The information in the

Wikipedia articles can be edited and changed by anyone which poorly effectives its credibility.

Scholarly articles are published articles that are peer reviewed. These articles are written by a experts within the field and then reviewed by additional experts to

assure validity and reliably of the information (Sewell, 2013). Ezine articles are online magazine articles, not peer reviewed articles. The authors of the ezine

articles may not be experts in the field (Sewell, 2013). The articles are easy to read and understand but the information may not be supported by evidence-based

practice. Ezine articles are not archived and are typically only available for a short time.

Blogs are websites created by someone stating their opinion. The authors may not be credible on the subject and may be biased leading to misinformation. Wiki Articles

can be updated and edited by anyone. The articles are not peer reviewed.
