INTELLIGENCE FAILURES

INTELLIGENCE FAILURES…. (OR ARE THEY?)

“Strategic surprise, or intelligence failures, often are neither: a surprise or a ‘failure’, at least on the part of Intelligence Agencies. What they often are is a breakdown in communications between the players involved; a breakdown that is often facilitated by a gross misunderstanding of what Strategic Intelligence can and cannot do.” (Source: http://www.brokenmirrors.ca/?p=419)

This section aligns with the next assignment. The idea here is to provide you with an understanding as to why intelligence fails. However, from the readings suggested, you may decide intelligence never fails, it is in fact something else which causes the failure…

Using your readings from the last assignment, you will begin to notice themes and patterns throughout past intelligence operations—especially those which have been subject to detailed review and criticism.

Feedback from the last essay from the university after grading

Although an interesting essay to read it unfortunately lacked critical discussion. A number of references are also missing from statements made.

For this assignment, consider the following points:

  • Ensure you demonstrate critical discussion throughout your essay.
  • Don’t rely on a single author for discussion on a theme / topic. Other authors will have conflicting opinions that will help you increase your critical discussion. Consider also what they may say and how it fits your argument (context).
  • Continue to apply yourself in such a strong way. Please just ensure you evidence the required aspects for Masters study.

Scope

A good attempt at discussing the key developments having influenced the intelligence community since 1939 and how these developments ‘may’ influence the intelligence community in the next 25 years. At this level I expect to read more critical thinking and a stronger argument.
