Write an essay about something you consider personally important or valuable, something that most other people wouldn’t necessarily find as valuable as you do. Cell phones, cars, money and most widely-produced consumer goods are not good topics. And don’t write about people or pets. But items that have sentimental value, things essential to an activity you love, or even your favorite song, book or movie make good topics. Your essay will have to accomplish two things. First, you’ll have to describe your topic in intense, sensory detail, using metaphors or other figurative language. Let’s hear your voice—this is a pretty personal topic, so the paper’s vocabulary and expression should match you (or at least the college version of you). Second, you’ll have to explain the item’s value using specific detail. Saying that it’s “handy in an emergency” or “picks me up when I’m down” doesn’t tell me much.
