Investigate Your Neighborhood Part I

Please follow the following steps. The zip code that you should use is “10458”
The American FactFinder is an excellent resource for accessing demographic information about a specific zip code. These data (data is always a plural noun) are

reflective of Census data and the American Community Survey.

Input your zip code on the American FactFinder http://factfinder.census.gov/faces/nav/jsf/pages/community_facts.xhtmlInput your own zip code (the zip code is 10458).

Once you have done so, you will see a population total for your zip code. Select “General Population and Household Characteristics” under 2010 census.

Collect the following data in percentages:

Male population
Female population
Median Age distribution
Race/Ethnicity distribution
White
Black/African-American
American Indian or Alaska Native
Asian
Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander
Two or More Races
Hispanic or Latino
Select two other data points from “Relationship,” “Households by Type,” “Housing Occupancy,” or “Housing Tenure.”
In a two page Microsoft Word document, describe your neighborhood using the data you have collected. Incorporate the percentages in your narrative. As you prepare your

narrative, consider these questions:

What gender, age and race patterns emerge?
What family/household patterns emerge?
Apply the sociospatial perspective to your analysis. Are these data an accurate portrayal of your neighborhood as you experience it, i.e. are these the same patterns

that you observe as a resident of your neighborhood? Why or why not? Really connect with the sociospatial perspective here; tie in specific textual references.
