People describe the Great Depression as the longest, deepest, and most widespread depression ever of the 20th century. It started in 1930 and went on for around 10 years. However, unlike the United States and the Great Britain, Japans economy was not seriously affected by it, which made me really interested in this topic because I want to know what happened and what kinds of actions were taken in Japan during this period. Similarly, to other countries, Japan tried to face and deal with the Great Depression by relying on the Government Programs. Additionally and most importantly, Japan focused on developing military power, which helped Japan actually take advantage of the falling of the Great Britains economy by taking over British-dominated markets.

I. Problems:
-Island Economy (dependent on export)
– WHILE THE NARROW RANGE OF RESOURCES AVAILABLE IN JAPAN HAS MADE TRADE VITAL SINCE THE 1850S JAPAN TRADES LESS HISTORICALLY AS A PROPORTION OF GDP THAN OTHER INDUSTRIAL ECONOMIES OF COMPARABLE SIZE

II. Government Programs:
EXCHANGE RATE AND OTHER INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL POLICIES?
-The Japanese parliament, the Diet
-Keynesian economics policies by Takahashi Korekiyo
WERE THESE POLICIES INSPIRED BY KEYNES WRITINGS OR ARE THEY POLICIES WHICH COULD BE LABELED KEYNSIAN ?
-Deficit spending and resulting inflationary pressures.
WHAT ABOUT MONETARY INFLUENCES

III. Nationalists and Military:
-The February 26 Incident
-Asia markets Domination
HOW IMPORTANT IN FACT WERE ASIAN MARKETS TO JAPAN IN THE 1930S
OR WAS THERE MORE ASIAN CO-PROSPERITY SPHERE RHETORIC THAN ACTION ?

IV. Effects on all the actions above:
Negative:
-Inflation
-Social Justice Issue caused by military invasion
DEATH AND DESTRUCITON IN CHINA?

Positive:
-Development of industrial production (doubled productions in 1930s)
-Out of the depression fast (by 1933)

Overall this paper will be focused on both the economic and military policies that the Japanese government came up with during the Great Depression, and comparing the good and bad about those decisions. Most importantly, after doing research I want to find out what made Japan unique, out of the depression fast, and become one of the most developed countries in the world later on.
