Overview: In this course, you will complete three polished papers totaling 5,000-7,000 words (approximately 15-21 pages overall). The assignments will increase in length and complexity. Paper 1 is an Academic Argument Essay (4-6 pages) connected with Concert 1 (Shona Mbira, John Funkhouser, or Winnie Dahlgren); Paper 2 is a Source-based Academic Argument Essay (5-7 pages) based on Concert 2 (the BerkleeBeanTown Jazz Festival); and Paper 3 is an Academic Argument Essay with Annotated Bibliography using at least three sources (6-8 pages), based on Concert 3 (Guitar Night: Jazz and Blues Showcase). The final version of each paper should be a polished piece of academic prose. The Criteria for Paper 1 are as follows:
Assignment: In Paper 1 you will developyour own academic argument to analyze (objectively) and interpret (subjectively) a single exhibit, with the help of another argument or position and another exhibit. For this essay, the primary exhibit is Concert 1 (Shona Mbira, John Funkhouser, or Winnie Dahlgren), or some portion thereof. The other argument or position should be from a published source, e.g. a review of the concert, relevant passages from a book, or a scholarly or journalistic article. The second exhibit could be another piece of music, a work of art, or a relevant event of political, cultural, or historical significance. To execute this assignment successfully, you must (1) write a review of the concert and select the portion of this review that is relevant to your argument; (2)summarize the argument or position to which you are responding; (3) advance a position or claim of your own; and (4) support your position or claim through analysis and interpretation of the particular exhibits. Length of Final Version: 4-6 pages.
