Jealousy is generally viewed as a universal cross-cultural emotion. Why are humans jealous?

What are the findings regarding the cause of jealousy? Do you agree that it is an etic behavior? Why or Why not? Are there cross-cultural/diversity differences (emics) in the expression and consequences of jealous behavior? Are there functional aspects of jealous behavior? If so, please explain.
