Journal Excerpts About Latin American Society

Imagine your team of sociologists and anthropologists who write for a prominent geographic magazine and have access to a time machine that will allow you to travel back in time to do your research as needed. Your team plans to travel to Latin America to study the culture and society of the region and has agreed to publish excerpts from your journals. Your journals catalog insights and conversations with community members and government officials.



·      Select a specific time period to create a journal about: colonial Latin America, 19th-century postcolonial Latin America, or 20th-century Latin America. Consider specific events of the selected time period with respect to the following:



o  Gender and ethnicity

o  Access to power

o  Economic stratification

o  The ability of groups to be a part of the social structure and effect change



·      Create a series of journal entries totaling 1,400 -words that addresses Latin American social structure in your selected time period.



o  Contrast the types of hierarchical social structures found in Latin American in the time period selected.

o  Demonstrate knowledge of relevant issues, concepts, and readings.

o  Explain the relationship between at least one economic and gender or ethnicity indicator in Latin America.

o  Explain how socioeconomic conditions prompted the changes in social structures.

o  Describe the differences between peaceful and violent changes in Latin American social structures.

o  Compare Latin American attitudes to similar social systems elsewhere at the time.

o  Describe the interplay of gender, ethnicity, and economic standing as a force in social change.
