Gwendolyn Brooks Essay http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfNCbIm1oHk
In 1948 Gwendolyn Brooks became the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize for a collection of poetry (Annie Allen). Richard Wright mentored Brooks early in
her literary career, as Brooks was from Chicago, IL, the place where Wright conceived Native Son. Brooks’ unique literary voice, coupled with her “reportage” within
the black community, became a staple in American literature. Her novel Maud Martha which also takes places in Chicago would further cement Brooks’ legacy of being able
to adequately depict the African American experience through a lens not stained by Dubois’ double consciousness.
