Guidelines for writing a Critical Thinking Statement:

1. To be written in 3rd person (avoid: I, me, we, you, us, your, etc)

2. Must be about a friend or family member who is a witness to the scientific phenomenon discussed in his/her everyday life. The CTS may be fictional or non-fictional. In other words, the person and/or thing can be imaginary, mythical, or real. Creativity is welcomed and encouraged.

3. The student may not write about a school situation at any level of education, a laboratory setting, health care setting or any profession directly related to science. In other words, don’t write about your little brother in pre-school, your cousin in Sunday school or even your mom in culinary school – no school settings!) This is NOT a mini research paper. You are not to look up facts and write about them in a CTS.

4. The CTS will be a minimum of one and a half pages in length (double spaced) and a maximum of three pages in length. Length is where students usually lose points. Strive to make each CTS at least 1 and 3/4 pages in length.

5. The font should be 10 or 12 point only. Times New Roman, Calibri, or Arial type must be utilized.

6. One inch margins are to be adhered to on all sides.

7. The body of the first paragraph of the CTS must start within one inch of the top of the page. Do NOT include a heading (name, date, section, etc) in the CTS. It is electronically submitted; therefore, no heading is needed. If the student adds a heading and it causes the body of the paper to begin below one inch from the top of the page, the paper must extend onto subsequent pages in order to meet the minimum length requirements. This usually equates to adding an additional line or two for every ½ inch below the top margin of the paper where the text finally begins.

8. The CTS must specifically address the topic in each and every paragraph tying it back to the topic again and again. Essentially, the CTS is a story about how an average person uses the topic in his/her everyday life. Specific examples of the topic’s use must exist within the paper.

9. Perform spell check and grammar check on the document.
