Compare the linguistic constellations in India and Indonesia by going though some of the most important facts from De Swaan’s chapters. Describe the ways in which India and Indonesia are similar postcolonial constellations; and discuss in what way they are different. What is the role of English in both contexts? Explain how the current constellations in India and Indonesia came to be; and how the current dominant languages compare to other important indigenous languages (i.e. Hindi in India, Javanese in Indonesia). Explain why Abram de Swaan considers the situation in Indonesia to be ‘Ghandi’s dream come true.
