Suggested Module Assignment Titles:

1. Many people believe that EAL students learn English easily and quickly simply by being exposed to everyday use and surrounded by native English speakers.  Comment on this view with reference to a particular group of learners. Draw on theories and classroom experience where appropriate.

2. What part, if any, do language theories and research-based knowledge play in language teachers’ professionalism and/or professional practice?  Please refer to the current research literature in relation to reading, writing, or any other aspects of additional /second language development.  You may draw on your own professional experience to illustrate your arguments.

3. All teachers, irrespective of their subject specialisms, working in primary and secondary schools in England are expected to teach and support pupils who are learners of EAL.  Is it possible to teach subject content and EAL at the same time?  Try to relate theory to practice where possible.

4. Schools in Britain collect data on their pupils’ ethnicity using labels such as ‘White’, ‘Pakistani’, ‘Bangladeshi’, ‘Indian’, ‘African-Caribbean’, ‘Black-Other’, ‘Albanian’, ‘Chinese’. They also collect linguistic data on their pupils using labels such as ‘English’, ‘Chinese’, ‘Arabic’, ‘Turkish’, ‘Gujarati’, ‘Panjabi’, ‘Yoruba’. What are the limitations of this practice when it comes to devising precise and relevant programmes for the teaching of all aspects of English for schooling purposes to the pupils concerned?

5. To what extent is genre theory a useful tool for the teaching of academic reading and writing to students with English as an Additional/Second Language?
