CONTENT
Each five-paragraph writing exercise represents 10% of your final grade and demonstrates your grasp of key concepts from readings, lectures, and discussions.  To create and maintain a sharp focus on a clearly-defined topic, use these guidelines:
Introduction: Carefully define the essay topic.
This paragraph introduces and narrows the essay topic.  To focus your ideas, specify the region or country and identify the cinematic forms you will write about.  For example:  Film content in twentieth-century Latin America emerged in a presentation range from newsreel footage of great men and events to documentary and narrative collages about national politics and culture.
Definition: Anchor and/or support ideas by identifying and citing your source(s).
This paragraph contextualizes observations with history and examples derived from readings and lectures.  It also defines terms and describes dynamics that frame observations with direct CITATION AND ATTRIBUTION of written or visual sources about relationships between society, images and ideas in Latin American film topics. Development:   Maintain a focus on the essay topic with references to authors or examples about representative films and ideas.
This assignment requires that you provide a REFERENCE to ideas about the essay topic provided in lecture or in class readings. [(Author:#)] or [(PPLecture:Slide#)]
Synthesis: Connect ideas, references, and examples in the essay.
This paragraph combines evidence from prior paragraphs to generate observations about the essay topic, and thus no longer requires direct citations or references.
Conclusion:  Overlong essays require further organization, and editing.
End your critique by reiterating the premises that form the basis of your observations.
Print, read, and edit your formatted paper prior to submission.

STYLE
Grammar and punctuation communicate facts and express ideas.  Papers that are disorganized, unruly and thin in the extreme are unacceptable, thus generate at least one hard-copy draft and proof-read your work before you submit it.

The UA Code of Academic Integrity requires full attribution for all sources.  Since the syllabus contains bibliographies for your sources, embed citations within the text.  For example:
In Culture and Imperialism, Edward Said describes culture as “… a battleground on which causes expose themselves to the light of day and contend with one another (Said: xiii).”
