Laventille and Robert Frosts "Gift Outright

Prompt:

Due on Feb 17.

3 to 4 pages, double space. Typed.

You can discuss 3 poems, approximately one page per poem, or discuss two poems, or you can compare and contrast two poems, or just one poem, in your paper.

The poems can be from just one poet or different poets—Jean Toomer, Claude McKay, Cuntee Cullen, Langston Hughes.

[Don’t forget to consult the power points I have sent to you]

Explication. Explain. What is the poem’s main theme or argument? What is the poem about? The statement (a sentence or a group of sentences) that answers these questions is the thesis statement of your paper. Then show that your take on the poem (what the poem is about) is correct by analyzing the poem and finding the supporting evidence for your thesis statement. See how themes, symbols, metonyms, metaphors, similes, characters, speaker, (or speakers) development etc.—how these elements contradict, complement, build on each other. Is the poem primarily made of images? Is there a central image? Or is poem build of an extended metaphor? Is the theme of the poem stated in the poem itself as a central argument. Is the poem formal or in free verse? How does the structure of the poem help interpret the poem? Sonnet? How does the argument develop in the quartrains? Rhyme scheme? Is there a conflict in the poem? What about tone? Irony? Does the poem take a stance or is it ambivalent? Does it vacillate? Is there a reversal in the poem? If there is a conflict in the poem, how does it get resolved? Does the poem ask questions? Who is the speaker of the poem? Where, when is the poem taking place? What is its situation? Action, Conflict, Description, Argument? Where is the location? What is the situation described in the poem? What, if anything, literally happens over the course of it, or what action, if any, does it describe? Is the poem simply capturing a feeling or describing something or someone? Is there a conflict that the poem is exploring or trying to resolve? Is there a progression or development or even an argument? When and how does the subject matter or focus or address SHIFT over the course of the poem? How is the content of the poem related to its form? Is there dramatic action? Is there a plot? Is there a refrain?

To sum up, ask these questions about the poem:

Why does it matter? What does it all mean?[THEME or meaning of the poem]

Why should the poem matter to anyone other than the poet, or what might the poem show and say to readers?

What problems, issues, questions, or CONFLICTS does the poem explore that might be relevant—to humanity in general, to the poet’s contemporaries, to people of a certain type or in a certain situation, and so forth?

How is each problem or conflict developed and resolved over the course of the poem?

How is each question answered?

What conclusions does the poem seem to reach about these, or what are its themes?
