learing in theory and practice

learing in theory and practice

Quality of Argument and Level of Analysis
• Clarity and coherence of main argument
• Use of evidence to support key points
• Depth of analysis

You have written an introduction to the assignment, which sets out what is being addressed even though it is not very easy to read. You have then moved on to write about HRD in some depth. The assignment asked you to consider any differences between HRD and training. To help the reader understand your argument it would have been useful to have some definition of HRD and training early on in the assignment. You have not given these definitions, and hence it is quite difficult to follow your argument.

There are some large sections of the assignment where there is no referencing. Hence, you are not always using evidence to support the points that you make.

Knowledge and Understanding
• Relevance of material used
• Depth of knowledge and understanding of key issues/theories
• Integration of academic theory

There is a rather limited range of referencing. You have tended to use one reference (Ronald) extensively, and have not used other references much at all. There did need to be more exploration of the differences between HRD and training, and in doing this there needed to be reference to material explaining these concepts.

You have spent a lot of the essay writing about the difference between HRD and HRM, but it is not apparent why this is relevant.

Ability to relate theory to practice
• Made use of appropriate examples from work experience to illustrate argument
• Struck the right balance between theory and practice

You have made some mention of software organisations, such as Google and Microsoft at the start of the essay. It would have been better to have a more thorough exploration of the differences between HRD and training at the start of the essay, and then apply this to the organisation when these foundations had been explained.

You have not really explored the organisation example enough. Do they do two very different things – ie engage in HRD and training – or do they have one approach that is consistent, showing that there really is no difference between the two?

Style, Construction, Expression and use of Sources
• Breadth of reading
• Academic referencing practice
• Organisation of points and argument
• Use of signposting
• Presentation and written style
• Clarity of expression

Your references have not all been listed correctly. You should start with the surname, and then give just the initial of the given names. They should be listed in alphabetical order, according to surname. Please also make sure to use the Harvard referencing style.

The essay has drifted from the topic in looking at the difference between HRD and HRM.

General Comments

Be sure to keep to the topic – the difference between HRD and HRM is not obviously relevant. It is also important to define key concepts at the start of the essay. Try to develop the use of organisation examples further.
