Project description
Letter 3

Imagine you are applying for a Visa credit card and asking for a credit limit of $15,000. While there is no set policy for reviewing and raising credit limits, the

companys policy explicitly states that new customers may only receive a $7,500 limit, even when the family income is very
high, as it is in your case. Write a letter to Visa requesting a credit card with a $15,000 limit, and give detailed reasons (you make up reasonable reasons) as to why

the policies and procedures of the company should be changed. The procedure should detail your reasons for an increase in the credit limit for new customers and why

the current credit limit being offered is not enough.

SUBJECT LINE

When writing a letter using the simplified format, no lines are indented. Include your
address and phone number where you can be contacted. Skip one line and include the
date. Skip between 1 and 10 spaces after the date and include the name and address
of the recipient of the letter. Skip two lines and write the subject of the letter in all capital
letters using bold font. Skip two additional lines and begin the text of the letter. The
simplified format does not use a salutation, and it is often the preferred format when you
are not certain of a reader’s title, name and/or gender.
As with a memo, in most cases you will begin with the purpose of the letter in the
introduction, and then elaborate on your main point in the body. The body may contain
indented lists, entire paragraphs indented for emphasis, and even subheadings. The
margins for a typical letter are a 1.5 inch left margin, 1 inch right margin, and 1 inch
margin at the top and bottom of the paper. Margins may be adjusted slightly to make
your letter fit on one page or to space the information so that page breaks do not
happen at awkward places. Create a straight, left margin, and all paragraphs and
headings should be lined up with the left margin. It isn’t necessary to indent the first line
of a paragraph. Single space within each paragraph and skip one line between
paragraphs.
If your letter exceeds one page, use a second-page heading whenever an additional
page is required. Second page headings should include the writer’s full name, the date,
and the page number. For example, Smith, February 10, 2008, page 2 of 3.
Close your letter with an invitation for further discussion and include how you can be
contacted. Skip 3 lines and type your name in all capital letters; if appropriate, include your title. You do not need a complimentary close because you eliminated the
salutation. Sign your name legibly in the 3 blank lines. .
