Levels of radiation exposure, human and environmental damages.

The book referred to is (Barker, Holly. 2013. Bravo for the Marshallese: Regaining Control in a Post-Nuclear, Post-Colonial World. Second Edition. Belmont, CA: Wadsworth.)

1) In Chapters 6 and 7, Barker examines how the nuclear testing experience has changed the Marshallese language. What changes have taken place? How do some Marshallese people use their language to “resist” or cope with the challenges they face?

2) In chapter 8, Barker discusses the nuclear claims settlement that was reached between the U.S. government and the Republic of the Marshall Islands. She also discusses some of the additional financial awards sought by the government of the Republic of Marshall Islands as compensation for the damages caused by nuclear testing.

3) Compare and contrast the Marshallese case with one of the other cases Barker outlines in Chapter 9, including: Hiroshima (Japan), French Polynesia, Chernobyl (Urkaine), the Nevada Test Site (U.S.), and the Hanford Reservation (U.S.). What similarities and differences can you find in terms of levels of radiation exposure, human and environmental damages, and reparations paid by the government responsible?

4) What is applied anthropology? How does Barker use the methods of applied anthropology to advocate for justice in the Marshall Islands case?

5) In Chapter 12, the final chapter of her book, Barker uses the term “structural violence” to describe what has happened to the Marshallese people. What does this term mean? In what ways have the Marshallese people faced structural violence? Do you agree that this is an appropriate description of the Marshallese case?
