Literacy Narrative Assignment and Grading Criteria

Write a Literacy Narrative about an important experience that you had which has impacted your literacy.  You should include your definition of what literacy means (you may say it directly or imply your definition through telling about your experience).  Your Literacy Narrative should be typed, double spaced, with a proper MLA heading (refer to The Norton Field Guide to Writing with Handbook pages 521-524 “Formatting a Paper”), and 3-4 pages long.  You will earn 10 points for turning in your rough draft and 10 points for turning in your revision draft on time.  Furthermore, your final draft will be graded using the following criteria. Your final draft must include your answer to these questions for your self-assessment:  What was the most difficult problem you faced while writing this essay?  How did you go about trying to solve it? (your answer should be no less than a paragraph)

Has the author written with a particular audience in mind?
Does the author display a clear stance (motivated, objective, reasonable, angry, etc.) in the essay?
Has the author designed, edited, and proofread carefully? Are there few MUGS (Mechanics, Usage, Grammar, Spelling) errors?
Is the essay organized clearly and logically?
Does it have an appropriate beginning?
Does the have a strong conclusion relating back to the importance of the author’s experience?
Does the essay meet the length requirement? (3-4 pages)
Did the author include a thoughtful answer to the self-assessment question?    /5
