low fat diet
The Scenario:
You are working as an RN ( nurse ) in a community-based health clinic that provides primary care, health education, and
preventive health services and generally promotes wellness in the local community. You have gotten to know the clients and
families who come into the clinic well, and you enjoy the ability to provide healthcare to a wide range of individuals of
different ages and from different backgrounds. Once a month you and your colleagues present a free health education seminar
for clients that focuses on a specific health promotion topic. These seminars are set up as a “debate” that explores two
sides of a compelling health care topic. Your goal is to help clients make sense of the often conflicting and confusing
information about health in the media. Examples of topics from past seminars include: “Vaccinating your child against
childhood diseases: A good idea or not?” and “Run or walk? Is low-intensity exercise just as good for your health as
vigorous exercise?” In addition to giving the seminar in person, you and your colleagues write up the information you
present in the seminar so that those who can’t attend can pick up a handout that gives the information that was presented.
Many of your clients are overweight, have or are at risk for developing diabetes and hypertension, and are interested in
losing weight and improving their health. Therefore, this month you are preparing a seminar on diet and nutrition titled
“Low Fat or Low-Carbs? What is the best advice for losing weight and promoting health?”
The Assignment:
1) Look through the following links to get an idea of the debate around the best diet for losing or maintaining weight and
reducing the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular problems.

Lifestyle-Recommendations_UCM_305855_Article.jsp
Can you identify the assumptions that are being made in these websites?
What statements are being given as “fact” without really good evidence to support those claims?
2) You have been assigned to the “low-fat” group; you will prepare evidence that shows the benefits and limitations of a
low-fat diet. Remember, you do not personally have to feel strongly about low-fat diet; you are to look for, evaluate and
present the best available evidence for the diet type you’ve been assigned.
3) Use the pdf files articles that I uploaded. These are your only resources for this paper. Don’t use any other resources.
They show the best available evidence that shows why, for whom, and in what ways your low fat diet is beneficial.
There are limitations and drawbacks to these diets as well, so be prepared to discuss those and whether they outweigh the
benefits.
4) Write your part of this month’s educational seminar. Here are the guidelines:
a. You can write in the “first-person”, as if you were going to read this at the seminar. For example, “I know many of you
are interested in eating right and maintaining your health, but there’s a lot of confusing information out there about what
to eat! I’m here to discuss with you what the best healthcare evidence says about a low fat diet.”
b. You must cite at least 3 healthcare articles that I sent you as a file to support your statements. Use APA formatting
for this —that is, after the sentence where you mention the study findings put the first author’s name and date in
parentheses (Example: (Eckfield, 2014)). Then at the end of your post, include the full APA formatted citation.
c. Make your arguments clear and use everyday language that the clients from your clinic, who may have a range of
educational backgrounds, will understand.
d. Discuss any limitations of the diet that you are presenting—for example, are there certain precautions that are valid
for some clients? Or for example, was there information about this diet in the past that we know now is incorrect or
incomplete?
e. Your presentation should be between (about 3 pages double spaced)
5) Post your seminar presentation to the Discussion Board.
6) Read through your colleague’s posts and respond to one person from the other diet group “low carb diet group”. I will
send it this part you as soon as one of my classmate posted from low carb diet group. Don’t forget I am in low fat diet
group. Our goal is to have a healthy, professional, respectful debate and discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of
these diets.
Here are the guidelines:
a. Write a response to your classmate that challenges and/or adds to the points made in their post. Be clear and
respectful in your comments. As I said I will send my classmate’s post as soon as she downloads it.
b. Cite at least 2 research articles that support your statements. They can be the same articles as you previously used,
but please use them in a new way —it is not appropriate to cut-and-paste your statements from your original post here.
Be creative and persuasive and use the evidence you found to engage your classmate in this discussion.
c. Your response should be between (about 1 page double spaced)
7) Return to your original post and read the response you received from your classmate. Write a short final reply to your
colleague, acknowledging their response and adding any final comments you wish to share. Your final response should be a
minimum of 1-2 sentences long. I will send this to you when I get a response after I posted my part.
