Management Information System

Acxiom Corporation, based in Little Rock, Arkansas, provides companies with consumer information to develop and build relationships with customers (www.acxiom.com). The companies include credit card companies, retail companies, automakers, and insurers. Acxiom is the world’s largest processor of consumer data, collecting and analyzing more than a billion records a day. Its access to such a vast database has been useful for other purposes, too. After September 11, 2001, when the FBI released the names of the 19 hijackers, Acxiom was able to locate 11 of them in its database.
In 2003, Acxiom encountered a major security breach of its consumer data. Daniel Baas, a computer systems administrator at a data-marketing company, had stolen the personal data of millions of people from Acxiom’s servers over a period of two years. Although the information does not appear to have been used to defraud consumers, this event raises security concerns about the vulnerability of databases such as Acxiom’s.
Answer the following questions:
What could Acxiom do to increase the security and privacy of its customers’ data?
Based on the article cited in this case study and your own research, do you think the government should have access to privatesector data?
