Management Theory and Practice – Analysis of an organisation.

The Task:
For this assignment, you will need to conduct an organisational analysis of Flight Centre, focussing on how the external and internal environment impacts on its management practices.
The task itself is reasonably self explanatory, but the process could prove difficult. The task has two key elements. First, what is the environment (external and internal) of Flight Centre? The second task is how these environmental factors might impact upon management practices within the organisation.
The task will be somewhat complicated by the difficulty of obtaining accurate information in relation to the internal environment (especially the internal culture). During the marking of this aspect of the assignment, this will be taken into consideration.
The first part in relation to the environment (external and internal) is where you need to apply the different theory about the environment – especially the external environment – to your analysis. I would expect this part should be relatively straightforward – after all the Company is a publicly-listed one, and there is a plethora of information available for you to draw on. The Company website (http://www.flightcentre.com.au/) is an obvious place to start, but it is merely the first place to look to try to get a feel for the Company. Then, using environmental theory, isolate those elements of the external environment that will potentially impact upon Flight Centre operations. You need to take account of impacts not just on the Australian operations, but the global operations as well. You then need to link those elements to the appropriate theory to demonstrate why there will be an impact. The second part of this section of the assignment concentrates on the internal environment, or the culture of the organisation. Discovering the ‘culture’ will be more difficult as I don’t want you writing to/interviewing Company employees. Your judgement, using publicly available sources, will be accepted – again based on theories of culture with links to practice. This takes care of the material covered in topic 1 of the unit, with links to topic 2.
The second part of the question is more problematic in terms of how these environmental factors impact upon management practices within the company. This is a key aspect of the task. It is not simply sufficient to identify environmental factors of importance; somehow they need to be incorporated into managerial decision making. And this is what the second part asks you to do.you will be restricted to basically three management areas – Ethics and CSR; Planning; and Controlling. So you will need to incorporate the results of your analysis into whichever of these areas you think are the most relevant, arguing why and how you will do this using whatever data you have been able to source in relation to the Company.
The purpose of this assignment is for you to develop skills in organisational analysis, particularly how an organisation’s environment, both external and internal, impacts on its management practices. You need to make clear links between your analysis of the Flight Centre environment and how it determines management practices using the theories you have been taught in the unit. This will involve identifying the key aspects of the external and internal environment and explaining how they drive management practices within the organisation and why.
