MANAGERIAL DECISION MAKING

MANAGERIAL DECISION MAKING
Peter Drucker (a world renowned business guru) once said, "Effective executives know that decision making has its own systemic process and it own clearly defined elements" (p. 4). This week’s lecture presented one example of one way that managers make effective decisions. Some processes within literature suggest six steps, while other suggest an eight step approach. One might get the impression that decision making a single event, meaning managers make a decision. In reality, decision making is more of a process that occurs over time and often is more of a social activity than an individual one.
Decision making takse time: time to do reconnaissance and information gathering. Decision making also involves people: people provide both information and ideas.

Q# 1: The challenge facing managers is how to effectively manages both and making an effective decision! What do managers need to do to ensure objective outcomes when dealing with people in group decision situations? (100 Words)

According to Making Decisions: Expert solutions to everyday challenges (2008) are faced with two modes of decision making as they rely on human involvement in decision making: inquiry and advocacy. As discussed in the text, in a perfect business world, all decision making efforts would be conducted in a mode of inquiry where participants collaborate, test and evaluate, think critically, present balanced arguments, remain open to alternatives, provide and accept criticism constructively, cultivate the minority perspective, and take collective ownership (p.13). Alternatively, the advocacy mode make decision making a contest, conversation is more persusation and lobbying, people tend to be spokespeople for their perspective, individuals strive to persuade others, defend their position, downplay the weakness of their suggestions, the minority view is discouraged or dismissed, and outcomes tend to be win-loss. An effective manager understands that it is not a perfect world so advocacy must be considered and managed, and the goal is to develop group decision efforts toward the inquiry mode. The challenge is how to manage the decision making potential of the group decision making effort.
