Managing an Impatient Workforce

Paper, Order, or Assignment Requirements

I will attach the basic instructions and additional refernces for the paper.

My main topic is “Managing an Impatient Workforce”, with a greater focus on how to manage, and retain overly ambitious employees. Often times managers realize how great employees tend to leave, and I plan to discuss some ways to manage and retain them. I have prepared the online sources below. Please use and cite them to support your stance. The “interviewees” below are real people, please “make up” an interview with them and quote and cite them to further support the paper. I will expect you to use some key words from some powerpoint slides in class I will attach later on as well. Thank you.

The following are research articles I have compiled and plan to use:

1. http://www.kellyservices.us/US/Business-Services/Business-Resource-Center/Management-Tips/Managing-Overly-Ambitious-Employees/#.VHUWZVhHAio

2. http://www.ambition.com.sg/blog/beware-the-drawbacks-of-an-overambitious-employee-blog-31402072837

6. http://hiring.monster.ie/hr/hr-best-practices/workforce-management/employee-retention-strategies/why-do-good-employees-leave-ie.aspx

As for the interviews, I plan on referring to the following:

1. Collin Sutherland – CEO of gold company Archipelago Resources
2. Hendra Surya – Director of palm oil company BW Plantation
3. Daniel Podiman – CEO of taxi company Express Transindo

Final Paper: Article about A Contemporary Management Issue

Gather the research and information that you will need to write an article that could appear in a journal, magazine, company newsletter or in a moderated on-line forum such as Inc.com.

  1. Find an article that includes research that you can use to enlighten managers about your topic.   (Some good places to look are Harvard Business Review, MIT Sloan Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Executive.) Show me a copy of the article. (You can email me a link.)

  1. Think about who you might interview to get some quotations for your article.

The paper that you write should be modeled after an article that might appear in aa business journal aimed at working managers or a company newsletter. In other words, your audience will be middle-level managers who are interested in honing their management skills, learning about management theory and discovering how other managers are successfully and creatively applying theory.

I am including an example that relates to the influence of size on a company’s performance. It is entitled, “The quirks of smallness” and appeared in The Atlantic. The author, Joe Pinsker, explores the question of how a small company can compete with larger rivals. He finds evidence that,”if the circumstances are right, limiting size – of a brand, of a company’s board, of a project team- can have unexpected benefits across industries” (p1.) Pinsker uses real-world examples, including Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf and collection of organizations’ boards or directors. He also cites multiple research findings – including a classic organizational behavior concept called “the Ringelmann effect.” This article is only an example that I am including to give you a sense of the tone and level of analysis that you should aspire to for your paper.
