MANAGING & FINANCING INTERNATIONAL MEGAPROJECTS

Coursework assignment no.3

Individual Assignment

Timescale

This coursework assignment is required for submission by: 1300h, Monday 20th April 2015

This is one month (approx) after the end of Term2, because you need time to reflect on Coursework2 which culminated in Presentations on the last lecture day of Term2.

It is an individual assignment with a hard copy required providing the analysis outlined below.

Assessment

The Coursework assignment is in two parts. Assessment will be weighted:

Part 1 = 40%, Part 2 = 60%

Part 1

Coursework 2 focused on a “before and after” simulation of a real-world front-end strategy planning process for a second-tier supply chain contractor bidding for and then delivering work on a mega-airport building project. You are required to write an essay of about 2000 words in total in which you reflect on:

  • your inputs into the bid team, what you thought about the bidding and review processes;
  • the quality of the conversations that you had within your team,
  • the quality of the outputs
  • the extent you/they succeeded as a team to work together and coalesce views into an acceptable bid presentation and subsequent review of delivery within the project

and in addition, provide commentary on these points:

  • how would you describe the T5 project in terms of timescales and uncertainties?
  • should the T5 Agreement have been applied to the fit-out work packages?

Part 2

There are 5 Transportation Case Studies on Moodle in the Cwk3 folder and each individual is asked to analyse the Case Study to which they are assigned by the Table below.

The task/questions in every case is as follows; and needs about 1500 words in total to respond:

  • Sponsors

describe as precisely as possible who the Sponsors were at

(a) project initiation and

(b) at financial close and

(c) one year after opening.

  • Funding
  • describe the method of funding used, and comment on its suitability.
  • State who is taking the demand risk, and whether you think the project suffers from optimism bias?
  • “Front End Loading” –
  • did the promoters do enough at the front end of the project to establish a scope and method of procurement that reflected good practice in megaproject management?
  • Who were/are the key stakeholders?
  • What were the key risks:
  • at the outset as perceived by promoters and the sponsors;
  • at completion as operations commenced?
  • how are these being mitigated?
