Mansfield Park

You will be writing a short critical analysis paper on Mansfield Park on a topic of your own devising. Remember that the best papers are ones that address a narrow scope with a very specifically defined topic, and rely upon concrete examples/evidence/quotations from the text.
For the assignment, please select a specific issue or moment of interest from the novel, and write a concise, well-argued, well-supported paper on that topic. Select a topic or issue that interested you or raised questions for you (narrow is best; there is no such thing as a topic that is “too small”) and consider how that topic plays itself out in the novel. Concrete textual examples/evidence (quotations, paraphrase, examples) must support your point. Think of this as an opportunity for you to make an argument about the novel and then draw upon the text to demonstrate that argument. Secondary or historical sources are optional—they can be helpful for certain kinds of papers, but are not advisable for most papers of this length. Even in cases when you do draw on other materials, remember that the main point of your paper should always be your argument. Please give page numbers/references for all your quotations.
A range of examples for Mansfield Park (to be narrowed further):
1) Select one character to discuss how that character is affected by Antigua. Tom Bertram, for example, seems even more dissipated when he returns. The film version makes it explicit that he is haunted by his Antiguan experience. How does this manifest itself in the novel?
2) How do places/spaces function in this novel? Austen is generally seen as a master of the drawing-room or ballroom, and is excellent at highlighting the interactions that take place in interior social spaces. But outdoor spaces—at Sotherton, Portsmouth, etc.—are also very central in this novel. Discuss the use of space and its social role in this novel.
3) How does the novel represent the Church/clergyman/the role of religion? Edmund, one of the novel’s most upright characters, values his future profession as a clergyman, but the novel stages some debates on this issue.
Papers are due on Tuesdays, and must be turned in at the beginning of class on the due date. A file version of the paper must also be posted on the course website by midnight on the due date. (The file version will work to determine the “submission date” of the paper, so you must upload a file version even if you have already turned in a hard copy; your paper will be considered late if you do not upload a file on time *even if* you have turned in a hard copy before the deadline.) Late papers are penalized 1/2 a grade for each weekday that they are late; please make sure your papers are turned in on time!
