Meaning of paradigm shifts

paradigm shift
This assignment is in three parts, as follows:

First, you should read the following Wikipedia overview of the meaning of paradigm shifts: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradigm_shift (Links to an external site.). Please note that there is much debate within the scholarly community, including at Saybrook, about the validity of Wikipedia citations. A general rule of thumb to follow might be to use Wikipedia (if at all) as a first point of reference if it comes up in a topical search, and then dig deeper for primary and/or scholarly published sources on the given topic. We are using Wikipedia in that way here, as a take-off point of reference, as providing for us a popular culture definition of the term “paradigm shift.” In the next exercise, you will take the next step, as just suggested, doing a scholarly search on the term. Rozenzweig (2006) (Links to an external site.)provides an excellent exploration of the issues related to the scholarly use of Wikipedia.

Second, do an “Academic Search Premier” search finding the words “paradigm shift” in article titles (Find “paradigm shift” in TI Title), and review the results. To do this: log in to the Saybrook website; click on “Library” on the homepage then select “Articles.” Click on the “Academic Search Premier” link; and then type in “paradigm shift” in the “Find” field and where it says “Select a Field (optional),” scroll to “TI Title;” then click “Search.” Approximately 250 articles will appear as a result of this search. Survey all the titles, observing the range of applications of this concept. Read a small number of abstracts that catch your interest. Read one article in full that is of greatest interest to you.
post one message (a few sentences or one paragraph in length) describing the meaning of “paradigm shift” in the full article you chose to read based on your Academic Search Premier article search. Be sure to note what is the “before” state of the system in question, as well as the “after” state (“before” and “after” the relevant paradigm shift). The goal of the assignment is to share with each other both the range of possible applications of the paradigm shift idea, and to discover the kinds of shifts that this particular group of co-learners finds interesting. This assignment is due by the date scheduled in the Course Calendar. There is no requirement that you post a response to other students’ posts here, but you should feel free to do so.
