Assessment Brief
Write an essay, answering ONE of the questions below.

1. Frederick Wiseman referred to his  work as ‘Reality Fictions’. How does this help us understand the nature of documentary ?
2. Truth in documentary is a construct. Discuss.
3. A performative documentary (as described by Stella Bruzzi) tells you as much about the filmmaker as about the subject of the film. From that point of view, is the filmmaker’s presence an advantage or a hindrance ?
4. Discuss and evaluate the effectiveness of the different methods and techniques filmmakers from two different eras used to portray their subject and ideas.

Essays should be 2500 words in length.

Assessment Criteria
The essay is weighted 40%. All essay answers should be supported by theoretical arguments and illustrated with specific film examples. Essays should be approximately 2500 words in length (excluding footnotes and bibliography) and must be handed in on Wednesday, 10th March 2014 at the assignment handling centre and also through Turnitin.

All essays should be either typed or word processed and the total number of words should be indicated at the end of the essay. Any essays which are above the maximum length will be penalised. When quoting from texts or articles you must provide full details of the source. In addition, include a list of books and articles you have consulted in preparing the essay. You should also provide details of any films that you have included in the essay (list the title, director and year of release).
