You will complete a Main Points Paper for each topic by reading about the topics on ProCon.org. Each topic on ProCon.org will have a core question, background information on the topic, and arguments for and against the core question. This information can be found in the tan box at the top of each topic page. The goal of this assignment is for students to state and analyze the main points related to the background and pro and con sides of the topic. Pick out the points that you feel are the most important and relevant to the topic.
Main Points and Point Analysis Explanation: ? Main point – State the point in quotations or paraphrase the point. Main point must be stated in a complete sentence – no isolated fragments or phrases. ? Identify the 2 -4 main points that should be used to evaluate the pros and cons of the issue. (For example, if you identify that cost is a main point, you would need to further state in the later Pros and Cons sections that short and long term costs could have a positive or negative affect.) ? Analysis of main point – Explain why you chose this as a main point; this should convey your opinion (and therefore be in your own words. No quotations or paraphrased information can be included in this section). You may (but are not required to) answer one or more of the questions below in your explanation. These questions are just a starting point to get you thinking. o Does it summarize an important argument for/against the topic? o Is it a good example? o Is it an idea you agree with/disagree with/are not sure you believe? o Does it resonate with you personally (such as remind you of something you’ve personally seen or experienced)? o Does it conflict with your personal experience?
