ESSAY TOPIC:
Using the information provided in Appendix 1, which contains abstracts from various research papers, write a short
PERSUASIVE essay (500 words) that defends or refutes the following statement:

“Menu labeling helps individuals reduce their caloric intake.”

Please note the following: Defend = generally agree with the statement; Refute = generally disagree with the statement The word generally is included because few arguments are black and white and in most cases whatever position you take in an argument will have some exceptions, contradictory information, or limitations which require explanation, elaboration and/or acknowledgement.
There is no one “correct” way to write this essay. The paper will be graded on how well you use the evidence in the abstracts to support your position not on which position you take.

• You need only use the information found in the abstracts in Appendix 1 to answer this question.
• You are NOT required or expected to do additional research.
• You must, however, include relevant information from ALL abstracts, in Appendix 1 in your essay.
• Your essay should include an introductory paragraph, a body (consisting of several paragraphs) and a conclusion.
• You are expected to paraphrase your sources (i.e. the abstracts) properly, and include in-text citations and a bibliography.
• For writing tips see Appendix 3 & 4.
• For info on bibliographic referencing see Appendix 5. Be sure to follow the format correctly. It is slightly different from the format used in the abstracts.
