Method/s Web of Knowledge
1. Develop a research question based on any ONE of the topic areas listed above. You will need to explain why you’ve chosen it, and why the question/topic area are intellectually relevant and
interesting. In order to do this, you will need to situate your explanation within the relevant empirical literatures (you can draw on any modules you’ve already taken, but you should carry out
additional searches on JSTOR, Web of Knowledge, and the University’s other Library resources).
2. Explain the method/s you would use to collect data that would enable you to answer the particular question you’ve developed, and include a discussion of your sampling/selection decisions.
You should reflect specifically on why these method/s (in comparison to all the different data collection strategies covered in this course) and data sources are particularly appropriate to the
research question you’ve devised.
3. Explain the method/s you would use to analyse the data you’ve collected. Again, you should consider specifically on why these analytical strategies, as opposed to any other techniques, are
best suited to allow you to answer your question.
4. In relation to the BSA statement on ethical practice (http://www.britsoc.co.uk/about/equality/statement-of-ethical-practice.aspx), or equivalent statement from another relevant
professional body, reflect on any ethical issues that might be involved in carrying out both data collection and analysis. Remember that you need to consider not just potential harm to other
people, but harm to yourself as well – both emotional and physical.
5. Finally, consider this process as a whole. Were there any false starts, particularly in constructing your question and in establishing the relevant empirical material? Was it hard to choose your
data collection or analysis method/s? Do you see any problems in putting this research proposal into practice?
