Mexican Social Realism Movement (ART)
Paper instructions:
While in exile from Mexico, David Alfaro Siqueiros settled for a time in the
United States. While in
Los Angeles in 1932, he painted three murals, one of which,
America Tropical, overlooked a beer garden near Olvera Street. When the mural was
originally unveiled, it shocked viewers, and city leaders became so nervous that within six months they had it, literally, white washed. The Getty Museum has recently completed a restoration project.
Write an essay that explains why the mural was so shocking in its time and what relevance it holds for Angelinos and Americans today. In the course of your essay, draw comparisons between America Tropical and works by other members of the Mexican Social Realism movement.
