Be sure to distinguish between the type of government/society before the recent turmoil and the type of government that has now formed. We are going to take three cases: Egypt, Libya, and Syria and look at each one and try and figure out how each country either transitioned successfully, fell into war, or proceeded with successful brutal crack downs. This isn’t a perfect experiment as events in each country are still unfolding. However, we can see the direction each one is breaking. While doing your research, focus on how the various institutions (for example, the military in Egypt), individuals, and/or particular culture in each society affected the manner in which the leaders faced the uprising.

Our task for this week is to answer the following questions:

What system of government does each one of these countries have/or had historically?
Elections?
Representative body?
Monarchy/Dictatorship?
What level of legitimacy did the government have in the eyes of the people?
What economic system did each of these government’s have?
What level of civil society did each government allow?
How many opposition groups, religious groups, democracy groups were allowed to function? If not, how repressive was the government?
Was there a free press?
1. Was the government captured by Islamists or did it stand in opposition to?
2. What was the level of support in the government against Islamic terrorism.
3. Breakdown over Sunni/Shite split re: rulers vs. ruled.
4.What level did Islam play in the government?
5. What was the country’s relationship to the United States?
6. What do the loyalties and the obligations of the military to the leaders of the country?
