Paper instructions:
YOU MUST READ OR HAVE READ THE BOOK “MIDDLE PASSAGES”

FIND TWO OUTSIDE, ACADEMIC ARTICLES on the novel _Middle Passage_ to anchor your ideas. You can agree with the articles, disagree with them, or do some combination of these approaches, but you must find outside articles. I want you to use the Luria library database NOT GOOGLE to find the articles.

Luria library requires a login and password that I have available.

The topic itself:
Your last paper is on Middle Passage. While the novel echoes the issues we’ve discussed in papers 1 and 2–there are plenty of ethical situations in the novel, and there’s a lot of discussion of making meaning—it is also a novel about transformation. Think about the number of transformations within the novel, from the obvious, Rutherford, to the Allmuseri, to Cringle–who transforms from man to food, to the ship itself, and so on.

In this paper, compare/contrast both the kinds of transformations that the main characters and groups undergo on the ship and their reactions to these transformations. Since this book was written in 1989, even though it’s set in the early 19th century, once you’ve thought through transformations in the novel, what larger comments about transformation do you think Johnson is making?

Support your assertions about transformation with ANALYSIS of quotations from the text.
* Make sure you explore Calhoun’s own transformation.
* Make sure you explore the transformation of the Allmuseri.
*You must also choose at LEAST one other person/group that is transformed,
*and you MUST discuss the Allmuseri god.
(total of 4 people/groups to be discussed).

Finally, make sure you add discussion and analysis of your two outside articles. Those articles must be cited in the Works Cited, and I would like a short, specific two sentence annotation about the approach the article takes to the novel following the Works Cited entry.
