In preparation for supervision, it is heipiiil to organize your session so that the clinical supervisor as
well as your trainee peers can help make sense of what happened and What help you need in the
future. Please be prepared to submit a mock clinical report to your instructor and your trainee
colleagues (please not adore. five pages) that presents the following information:
Presenting Problem: 29 points
Please identify the W presented by the family system, W
How would you structure treatment based on information from this first session?
Are these volunteers who might benefit from additional services beyond the scope of a family
therapist?
Clinical Hypothesis 20 points
A clinical hypothesis is a statement about the system. It is not a summary of everything that
was said in the session. it is not a summary of the problem. It is not a description of the
identified patient. A clinical hypothesis is an educated formula that explains how a system is
working to maintain itself in a dysfunctional manner. A therapist must take into account not
only what the family presents as a problem, but also family structure, family stressors and
family life cycle transitions. A hypothesis incorporates contextual dynamics and process
issues. If you do not understand this on the first day of class, you will not be alone. There
will be two extra credit exercises and an individuai supervision session to assist you in your
learning.
