Moghaddam cites Baumeister’s idea that under certain conditions high self-esteem can be a source of intolerance towards out-groups (Haidt, p 75, describes the same work and says high self-esteem is one of the “two biggest causes of evil”). How does this effect work according to Moghaddam and Haidt? What are the conditions under which intolerance or evil are likely to occur? Why is Moghaddam citing this work in the context of multiculturalism? Has it been your experience that Canadian multiculturalism is likely to lead to the conditions that would promote the kind of effect described by Baumeister?
