Credit Hours:
Walden University assigns credit hours based on the number and type of assignments that enable students to achieve the course learning objectives. In general, each semester credit equals about 42 hours of total student work and each quarter credit equals about 28 hours of total student work. This time requirement represents an approximate average for undergraduate work and the minimum expectations for graduate work. The number and kind of activities estimated to fulfill time requirements will vary by degree level and student learning style, and by student familiarity with the delivery method and course content.
Description of Course:
Through this course, students explore the planning and organization of health promotion programs for underserved, economically disadvantaged, and underrepresented populations. Students learn to design health promotion programs that consider the social, economic, and medical conditions influencing the health status of diverse populations. Throughout the course, students develop a health promotion project for a specific population, based on the intervention mapping process. Through this project, students analyze and integrate principles of social change and empowerment, summarize research that supports the decision-making process, and critique institutional and social systems. Students also have the opportunity to assess and discuss the future of health promotion, considering projections of needs over the next two decades. (Prerequisite(s): Foundational and core curricula.)
Course Prerequisites:

Course Geography/Organization:
The Course Geography information is available in the course’s introductory announcement.
Online Discussion:
The exchange of ideas between colleagues engaged in scholarly inquiry is a key aspect of graduate-level learning, and is a requisite activity in this course. The success of the online learning environment depends on consistent and purposeful interaction with the learning community.
Discussion topics are listed in the weekly Assignments and are also posted in the weekly Discussion Forum as Threads.
In addition, students are expected to comment on materials posted by fellow students. To be counted as participation, your postings need to be thoughtful; that is, they refer to the week’s readings, relevant issues in the news, information obtained from other sources, or ideas expressed in the postings of other class members. Where appropriate, use references to support your position. Your postings must demonstrate that you have reflected on the assigned readings, and synthesized the material with your previous knowledge and experience. Adhere to the weekly time frame to allow others time to comment on your work.
Weekly discussions follow a 4 phase cycle in which you: 1) write about the assigned topic and provide support from the literature and other sources; 2) comment on what other students have written about the topics; 3) read the comments others have made on your posting; and 4) respond by stating what you have gained from their insights/commentary. Respect the weekly deadline.
Within the first two days of the class, post a self-introduction on the Discussion Board. Go to the Class Café and add to the self-introduction thread. Briefly, share information about your previous education, professional experience, and goals after completing the program. Also, identify where you live.
General Guidelines for Written Assignments
In general, a paper must be related to a discussion topic, an issue covered in class, found in course materials, or current literature.
A superior paper demonstrates breadth and depth of knowledge, and critical thinking appropriate for doctoral level scholarship. Papers must follow APA Publication Manual guidelines and be free of typographical, spelling and grammatical errors. The length of each assignment is listed in the weekly assignment.
References: Every statement made in a scholarly research paper must be supported by a reference. Be very cautious when stating your opinion, or using terms suggesting absolute facts, or values, as these MUST be supported by references. Note that journal articles and textbooks have information cited from other sources.
There are different types of sources:
Primary sources are books written by t
he author. For example, a theorist’s or writer’s original book is a primary source.
Secondary sources are articles/books that refer to the primary work. For example, there are books and articles written ABOUT theorists or an original writer’s work.
Peer-reviewed journal articles are reviewed by persons in a field or discipline. They review manuscripts and determine if they meet a journal’s publication standards.
Course Assignments:
The week for this course starts each Monday(Day 1) and ends on Sunday (Day 7). The exact dates are listed in the Term Calendar on the left navigation bar .
Submission of Assignments:
Assignments are posted in different ways:
The Discussion Board is used to submit responses and comments to the Weekly Discussion Questions.
The submission links are used to submit assignments to the faculty.
The specific requirements and guidelines for assignments are listed in the Assignments section of each week.
Requirements: Students are expected to participate at least three separate days a week by posting materials and contributions to the Discussion Board. The week begins on Monday (Day 1) and ends on Sunday (Day 7). Your discussion posting must be submitted by Friday (Day 5) of each week. This allows time for everyone to respond to the postings.
If circumstances arise that result in your being absent for more than 4 days at a time, please contact your instructor.
Discussion Board weekly assignments include a combination of: (1) posting questions, comments and/or responses to the Discussion Forum, and (2) providing feedback to peers on their Forum postings. After each assignment is posted, you should expect to receive timely feedback (from the instructor and/or the other learners). Conversely, please make every effort to provide thoughtful and prompt replies to the work of your peers. When you post to a Discussion Forum, all class members will have access to, and are free to respond to any of your messages.
The maximum points you can earn for discussion each week is 100 points, for 12 weeks. The points are based on the quantity and quality of your postings. See rubric in Course Info.
Health Promotion Project Written Assignment:
The written assignment for this course is health promotion paper that is developed over several weeks. There are 6 sections. In the specified week, complete the assigned section.
The first 5 sections of the paper should be no more than 1000-1200 words (approximately 4-5, double spaced pages) and derived from course readings and other peer-reviewed, credible scholarly resources.
APA style should be used for all citations and references. If a student has a particular need to utilize another writing format, then this should be addressed with the professor prior to beginning the paper.
Each section will include the following information as appropriate:
1. Introduction clearly identifies essential elements of the topic.
2. Theories, concepts, and models related to diverse populations are examined. Inclusion of research sources is evident.
3. Morbidity, mortality, and related demographic/health status information is included if appropriate.
4. Discussion includes critical thinking and analysis of information.
5. Application to the selected health promotion project is presented.
6. Summary of the section.
7. References in APA format.
Week 2: Section A
Prepare a comprehensive overview of a proposed health promotion project. This may include an outline as well as the narrative.
After Week 2, the focus of Sections B-E is on the topic listed rather than the content of your project. Put yourself in the position of a leader who is responsible for developing a health promotion project. You need to consider all the elements that will impact your ability to develop the project. After exploring each of the areas, make the case for using specific approaches for your project.
Week 4: Section B
Describe the leadership principles and skills needed to develop a health promotion project.
Week 6: Section C
Summarize selected research that supports decision-making processes used when planning health promotion projects.
Week 8: Section D
Analyze selected principles of community social change and empowerment that support health promotion in diverse populations.
Week 10: Section E
Critique selected institutional and social systems that support health promotion projects.
Week 11: Section F of your Health Promotion Project
Integrate all the previous elements into a final Health Promotion Project Paper. The paper will be a demonstration of an “ideal” health promotion project.
Final Health Promotion Project Paper
Combine the previous 5 sections of your project into one paper.
Eliminate any duplication of information in the individual sections.
Synthesize the information and relate directly to your specific Project.
The final paper will be 20-25 pages, double spaced.
Note: The final paper must include a cover page with your name, title of project, course title, number, and quarter, email, and an Introduction (which will provide an overview of the entire paper and indicate how the sections are related).
The final paper must include the following elements:
Introduction
Provide an overview of the entire paper and indicate how the sections are related. The outcome is to develop a Health Promotion Project for a specific population, based upon the Intervention Mapping process.
Describe the leadership principles and skills needed to develop a health promotion project.
Summarize selected research that supports decision-making processes used when planning health promotion projects.
Analyze selected principles of community social change and empowerment that support health promotion in diverse populations.
Critique selected institutional and social systems that support health promotion projects.
Describe the Health Promotion Project, and support what you plan do based on information from the previous sections and using Intervention Mapping.
Summary
References (APA style).
Submit Section F, your Final Paper via the submission link.
Feedback Schedule:
I will log on to the course Discussion Forum a minimum of 3-4 days a week to evaluate and respond to class discussions.
Unless there is a specific question, I do not respond to each and every posting because there will be a lot of redundancy.
I do, however, read every posting and expect all students to read all postings, including mine and other students’.
I may choose to respond to a particular posting because I believe it covers important issues or issues brought up by several students.
Any specific course-related questions or concerns are responded to within 48 hours of my receiving them. If needed, students may email me to set up a time for a telephone conference.
Responses are posted in the Discussion Forum and in the Announcement sections of the course for everyone in the class.
Individual responses are sent by e-mail at least five times a week. The e-mails respond to individual student questions and issues. I also address any issues with student participation and meeting course requirements.
Written assignments are returned within 9 days after the submission deadline.
Course Procedures:
This course is designed to increase your knowledge about the health needs of diverse populations and to learn about strategies to develop health promotion projects.
Several strategies are used to accomplish these goals:
(1) weekly assigned readings
(2) weekly Study Notes to highlight important module content
(3) weekly discussion forum postings to allow learners to benefit from peer experience and knowledge, and
(4) individual written assignments.
This course contains 12 weekly sessions. The amount of time it takes a student to work through each session’s activities will of course vary, however you should allocate 10-15 hours per week to completing the activities for each session.
In order to derive maximum benefit from this course, you should log on to the course Website every 2 days.
You should begin each week by reading announcements and then start working on the weekly assignments.
Late Assignment Policy:
Students are expected to submit assignments by the due dates noted in the course. In extenuating circumstances, such as illness, the student must contact the instructor as soon as possible to discuss the situation. In those circumstances, faculty will determine the appropriate course of action for the student. Depending on the situation, these actions may include recommendations to drop the course (if within the university drop/withdrawal period), acceptance of some or all of the overdue assignments with or without penalties, or failure to accept assignments.
Assignments submitted late without prior agreement of the instructor, outside of an emergency absence, or in violation of agreements for late submission, will receive a grade reduction for the assignment, amounting to 20% point loss per day. After 5 days, the assignment will not be graded. Students should be aware that late assignments may not receive the same level of written feedback as do assignments submitted on time.
Late postings impact the quality and quantity of class discussions and often forfeit the opportunity for valuable peer feedback. Please remember that your timely participation is necessary and vital to your understanding of the course material and makes the course run much more smoothly.
Classroom Participation:
In accordance with US Department of Education guidance regarding class participation, Walden University requires that all students submit their required Week 1 assignments within each course(s) during the first 7 calendar days of class. The first calendar day of class is the official start date of the course as posted on your myWalden academic page.
Assignments submitted prior to the official start date will not count toward your participation.
Financial Aid cannot be released without class participation as defined above.
Students who have already taken, and successfully completed, at least one or more class(es) with Walden will be dropped ONLY from any class(es) in which they are not participating if they do not complete their assignments by the end of the 7th day.
Students who are taking their first class with Walden, and do not complete their assignments by the end of the 7th day, will be administratively withdrawn from the university.
If you have any questions about your assignments, or you are unable to complete your assignments, please contact your faculty member.
Weekly Course Schedule
All assignments are due by 11:59 p.m. Mountain Time (MT) on the day assigned (which is 1:59 a.m. Eastern Time (ET) the next day). The time stamp in the classroom will reflect Eastern Time (ET), regardless of your time zone. As long as your submission time stamp is not later than 1:59 a.m. Eastern Time (ET), you have submitted on time.

Discussion:
(Use the Discussion Board) Assigned discussion topics are listed in each week’s Assignments area and in the Discussion Board for each week. Weekly discussions follow a 4 phase cycle in which you 1) write about the assigned topic; 2) comment on what other students have written about that topic; 3) read the comments others have made on your posting; and 4) respond stating what you have gained from their insights/commentary.
Use the following suggested format to assure you meet the discussion criteria:
Day 1 through Day 4 – Post your responses on the topics for the week.
Day 5/Day 6 – Comment on at least 2 colleagues’ postings by day 4, selecting, if applicable, postings that have not yet received feedback. Challenge others’ logic, assumptions, clarity, etc. as appropriate.
Reply to the collective comments of others on your original postings, respond to additional colleagues’ postings.
Day 7 – Read any additional postings and respond as desired.
Post any final comments for the week. Share what you gained from the discussion this week.
Week 12 – Discussion Questions. Post your responses in the Discussion Board.
