MUS Film Response 3 Beethovens Symphony No. 3 (Eroica Symphony)
Please watch (dont just listen to) Beethovens Eroica Symphony in its entirety
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InxT4S6wQf4). In your opinion, what is the most
dramatic moment in the piece? Describe what happens in this moment: which instruments
are featured, what happens that makes it feel dramatic. Please also note in your response
the time at which this moment occurs (for example, 34:14).
The Eroica is a symphony for and about Napoleon Bonaparte; Beethoven originally
wanted to name the work Bonaparte. Using the program notes (your required reading)
and what you notice in watching the symphony, briefly describe how each of the four
movements sonically illustrate parts of Napoleons life and legacy. What part of
Napoleons story does each movement depict? How are specific instruments used to
illustrate these parts of the Napoleon story?
For an extra point: What do you notice about how the musicians and conductor (the guy
with the baton) interact with each other? How are they communicating?

pause, and turn the pages of their sheet music.
