Museum Project

Prompt:
Research local art galleries and museums and choose an exhibition you would like to visit. A few suggestions: San Diego Museum of Art (Balboa Park), Museum of Photographic Arts (Balboa Park), Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD, locations downtown and in La Jolla).
Visit the gallery/museum and take notes on what you see. Pay attention to the kinds of art in the exhibit and consider some of the following questions: From what time period is the art? Is one artist highlighted or are there many artists from one period or art movement? How would you describe the art? Where is the artist/are the artists from? How do the historical, social, and cultural contexts of the work impact the style and effect of the work? What medium/media does the artist use? How have the pieces been constructed (think about composition here)? What effects does the art have on the viewer? What are some of your responses to the art? What does the art make you think about? Which pieces stand out the most to you? Why? Which piece is your favorite? Why?
Choose two or three pieces in particular you’d really like to focus on. Take more detailed notes about this piece. How is it composed? To what effect? What is the context of the piece? What is the style? What is your evaluation of the piece?
Type a 2-3 page double-spaced response that addresses the following:
Name the museum, the artist(s), and title of the exhibition.
Summarize the context of the exhibition (time period, kind of art, range of art, where the artists are from, etc.) Summarize what you see in terms of the kind and quality and composition of the art.
Focus specifically on two or three pieces and compose a 1-2 paragraph visual analysis of each piece to provide a specific example of a work that you most enjoyed or found most compelling.
Evaluate the exhibit: To what extent would you recommend others visit this exhibit? What did you find most interesting, compelling, and of high quality? Were there any pieces or aspects of the exhibition you found weak or lacking?

The overall structure should be: introductory paragraph overview of the museum exhibition; one body paragraph for each piece of art you chose in which you describe the composition and your interpretation and response to the pieces; one or two final paragraphs providing an evaluation of the exhibition.
