Choose 3 or 4 of the different aspects of culture listed below to address in your papers.  Explain some of the characteristics of, for example, the kinship system,

religious system, and subsistence system.    • Also explain how various aspects of the culture operate and how they interrelate with each other culture is integrated,

different aspects of culture affect each other and are often connected in various ways.  For example, kinship and marriage customs both often influence and are

influenced by religion.  Try to explain why this might be the case, why this is important, and how this is manifest in the particular culture you read about.  .

Remember that  Please be explicit enough in your paper to illustrate to me how these various aspects of culture operate within the broader social context and be sure

to explain the anthropological significance of the various aspects of culture presented in the ethnography you review.  Try to incorporate concepts we have discussed

during the semester and discuss them in the context of the particular ethnography you read.  Also include specific examples to illustrate the aspects of the culture(s)

you discuss in your paper.  Details and examples help add substance and can often help substantiate what you are trying to say. Don’t simply provide a laundry list of

cultural beliefs and behaviors. Explain why these beliefs, behaviors, and values are important to a broader understanding of the culture in question. Be sure to

explain how these various beliefs and behaviors both reflect and influence other aspects of the culture. As you write your papers think about how the author(s)

explains the beliefs and behaviors of members of this culture within a broader social context. In other words, don’t just describe the culture, explain it. This

assignment is not simply a book review (which you should have mastered by the fourth grade). This assignment requires you to think critically about the culture you

have read about.  Be sure to provide some basic information about the culture you read about (e.g., where do they live?) so that I, the reader, will have some

background information with which to contextualize your paper.  Also try to avoid using lengthy, direct quotes as they tend to detract from the substance of a paper.

If you do include direct quotes, be sure to include an in-text citation with the appropriate page number(s), and be sure that you fully comprehend the meaning of the

quoted text. You should also avoid putting common terms and short phrases in quotations unless they’re being used in a manner inconsistent with their actual meaning.

If you refer to an author in the text of your review, use only their last name. Do not include an author’s first name and don’t add titles such as Ms. or Mr. to an

author’s name. Be sure to use a formal tone in academic writing. Do not write the review as though you’re posting to social media or sending a text message or email to

a friend.  At the end of the paper you need to include the bibliographic citation information for the ethnography you reviewed (i.e., author’s or authors’ name(s),

date of publication, title of publication, and name of publisher). You may use any widely accepted citation format. If you do not include the bibliographic citation

information, I will deduct points from you final paper grade.  You should address at least 3 or 4 of the following topics or aspects of culture: 1. Subsistence

strategies 2. Economy o Social Organization 3. Political Organization 4.  Exchange practices Religion/Ideology 5. Culture change 6. Cultural identity 7. Marriage and
