The Way Final Essay
Due: Mar 18, 2015, 11:59 PM

Answer in a thoughtful 500 word (one page) essay. This essay should be in MLA format – 12 point font, Times New Roman font, double-spaced, edited for grammar and spelling. Your content should not be a book report – do not tell me what happened in the movie. I saw it, I know what happens. I’m looking for an analysis of the movie: what does it mean? The prompt is below:

Four strangers, four vastly different personalities, each of whom are spiritually-tattered and emotionally-wounded, bond together on the Camino pilgrimage to Santiago. The four strangers, soon to develop deeply intimate friendships are:

– Tom, a stubborn yet gentle father grieving for his dead son decides to finish the pilgrimage for him, leaving his ashes at each stop. He is the patriarch, the wise leader, that father figure of the group who’s cause for pilgrimage is perhaps the most worthy (the death of his son), yet not more valuable. He struggles with forgiveness and apology more than anyone in the group.

– Joost, whom is the kindest of men and always quick to forgive while never being judgemental, has a marriage that is disintegrating due to the fact that his wife no longer wants to sleep with him. He’s a man who loves in spite of not being loved, and ultimately seeks love in others to fill that which he lacks at home.

– Sarah, jaded by physical and psychological abuse of her ex-husband, her loss of trust in men is her most apparent struggle. Yet, restoring this trust seems to be her underlying goal due to her faith that people are ultimately good. (Interesting to note that although she doesn’t trust men, yet her traveling party is made up of 3 men. This is strange due to the fact that she is completely alone with them for over a month.)

– Jack is a writer who’s words are graceful and full of depth. He knows the formula for great writing, yet his dream to become a truly great novelist is hoodwinked by his spiritual insecurities of authentic personal self-revelation. His desire for the spiritual is very clear – it takes him 3 moths to finish a 1 month pilgrimage – yet he fears that by digging deeply into his neglected spiritual life that he may have to actually speak and write truthfully for the first time in his life.

Write an essay about how these four complete strangers (Tom, Joost, Sarah, and Jack) who all have different aims, personalities, and world views are able to form such a deeply spiritual bond over the course of their less than perfect pilgrimage together.

– Some questions to think about: How do they actualize each other’s potentials to grow? (give specific examples). How do they rely on each other? At what point does their bond solidify and why does it solidify then?
