Short Paper: Professional Degrees as Marital Assets

In legal memo form, answer the following question: Can a Certified Public Accountant’s professional CPA designation be a marital asset?

Some states do consider professional degrees earned during the marriage as marital assets, but other states do not. However, this project does not ask about professional degrees, such as J.D. or M.D., but about a CPA license, which is issued by a state agency. Use the article from the Reading “The CPA License at Divorce” to provide background in thinking through your response.

The paper should do two things:

  1. First approach your paper from the point of view of a CPA within your state of residence who is involved in family law mediation. On Westlaw, research the specific laws in your state that govern marital assets. Respond to the questionCan a Certified Public Accountant’s professional CPA designation be a marital asset?
  2. You will need to determine the value of the professional license and the “costs” (those that are apparent and not so apparent, and for both parties). In the article, the author discusses one way of determining “value.” In your paper, work through the formula detailed in the article. If your state does something different, please discuss and explain the differences
