Think about a public location that you may already be familar with: supermarket, coffee shop, bar, gym, etc. It could also include the shopping mall, a street corner, or a bus. What types of social interactions occur there? What social groups congregate, and what roles do they play? How do they relate to other groups? How do individuals interact with one another? What demographic details might be pertinent to these interactions: Class, ethnicity, gender?

The assignment asks you to think about some of these common places in a sociological way. What are some of the rules of interaction and social order in these places? How do people present themselves and manage the impressions of others around them? What actionns are considered normal and which ones would be or are out of the ordinary, or a problem to the social order of the place. How do people react to interruptions? What spaces, objects, decorations or props are used to stage interactions?
